Mosley athletic director Josh Vandergrift has been placed on leave by Bay District Schools.

Thirty minutes after NewsChannel 7 placed a call inquiring about Vandergrift being placed on leave, the district's Director of Communications, Sharon Michalik, sent an email to all local media containing a copy of the email sent to Vandergrift. The email, sent from Executive Director of Human Resources Shirley Baker, reads:

"Mr. Vandergrift,

"As of 3:00 p.m., the Superintendent has yet to receive the documents for the Public Records Request. Therefore, effective immediately, you have been placed on paid administrative leave until we have the opportunity to meet with you and your representative to discuss next steps.

"During this time, you should not contact any students, attend any events or visit any Bay District School campuses for any reason.

"Please let me know if you have any questions."

Michalik said in her email to media outlets, "We do not typically comment on open personnel situations. We hope to be able to resolve this next week."

The district's decision to place Vandergrift on administrative leave stems from an incident that occurred Monday, in which the athletic director informed NewsChannel 7 Sports Director Scott Rossman of the resignation of boys soccer coach Tommy Davis.

According to sources, another local station approached the district demanding to know how NewsChannel 7 knew about the resignation, leading to a request for texts sent on Vandergrift's personal cell phone. Sources tell us he was seeking legal advice from his union representative before fulfilling the request. When he delayed fulfilling the request while examining his legal rights, he was placed on administrative leave.

Sports Director Scott Rossman tried to contact coach Vandergrift Friday afternoon but those attempts were unsuccessful.

This story will be updated as NewsChannel 7 learns more.
