LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Mosley football starts spring practice the year with a lot to replace.
Twelve starting positions are up for grabs, with five offensive openings and seven on defense, most due to graduation.
That's not all.
Although the team is geared up appropriately for twenty total practice session this month, Hurricane Michael depleted the program's resources.
They're getting by. Just like the Panhandle community at large banded together to help one another, the high school football community in Florida has been chipping in to assist the 'Fins.
"We've got a lot of stuff, some used equipment donated from some schools in central and south Florida which was really huge, that's what we're using this spring," head coach Jeremy Brown said. "Then with our BSN team page [see bottom of story], very good support on that. A local contractor is committed to building us a new equipment shed to put all of our stuff in. Six years worth of equipment we had accumulated we now have to replace, but we're making some strides and that's very encouraging."
Usually spring camp is about building fundamental skill sets and instilling toughness. Brown doesn't need to spend too long on the toughness part this year; circumstances out of his control did that for him.
"I don't think there's anything we can do to them coaching wise as far as coaching them hard, putting pressure on them, making them uncomfortable, that they can't persevere through now," Brown said of the program's state following the storm "I don't think there's any adversity in a game that's any worse than what these kids and their families the last six of seven months. All those things feed into these guys being very strong, just being a tight knit, really close group. We think that that's going to help us have a really special year."
Mosley has one of the busiest spring schedules in the region. They travel to Tallahassee this Saturday for scrimmages against Chiles, Florida High, and Rickards.
Following an intrasquad scrimmage next week, they'll participate in a home jamboree May 17 at Tommy Oliver Stadium along with Arnold, Vernon, and Tampa Catholic.
