Mosley hosts second annual Holiday Shootout at Gulf Coast

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - School is out until the new year, but high school basketball is back Thursday through Saturday with the Mosley Holiday Shootout.

Ten boys teams play three games each at Rutherford (only on Thursday) and Gulf Coast—not Mosley's Redfern Gym. A contingency plan for the host is giving those taking part a college experience.

"Our floor at Mosley was destroyed by the Hurricane," Dolphins head coach Michael Memmen explained. "We haven't gotten a wood floor yet. We're waiting on that. We had our Christmas tournament planned already thinking we were going to get a floor and when that didn't come through, we reached out to Gulf Coast and asked them if we could use their venue. They were helpful and gracious enough to let us do that, so it's really exciting to play in a venue like this. The seating, the collegiate floor—it's a top notch facility and hopefully it's a top notch shootout for us."

Bay, Bozeman, Mosley, and Rutherford, and Wewahitcka fill out the local list of entrants, while Belleview, Dunnellon, Suwannee, Timber Creek, and Trinity Catholic make the trip from outside the area for the second annual event. The hope is that outsiders will gain more than just positive results on the floor from their participation.

"When you have an area like Panama City and Panama City Beach, you want to bring teams and showcase the area you live in," Memmen said. "Our goal for this Holiday Shootout is to bring in some out of town teams, introduce them to our community, and then make sure that they're getting competitive games, getting better. They've checked into the hotels, seen the beach. They get to play here at Gulf Coast in the college area, so they're excited about the opportunity to be here."

Games Friday and Saturday will be played exclusively at Harrison Field House, with three day passes available for $25.
