NICEVILLE, FL (WJHG/WECP) Northwest Florida's new men's basketball head coach Butch Pierre certainly has his work cut out for him, but he's thrilled to be the coach following in the steps of Steve DeMeo with the Raiders!

New NWF men's head basketball coach Butch Pierre

As we told you last week, Raiders hired Butch Pierre as their next head coach, he replaces Steve DeMeo who moved north for an assistant's job at St. Johns.

Coach Pierre moving to Niceville with a wealth of coaching experience. The 56 year old graduate of Mississippi State, hpent time at 8 different programs, including the likes of LSU, Oklahoma State, NC State and Memphis.

He knows he has rather big shoes to fill, following the tenure of coach DeMeo, who won five conference, three state and one national championships. Coach Pierre though undaunted by that, and here's his response to what drew him to this job!

"The leadership of this University." says coach Pierre "The leadership of the athletic department. And also they have all the necessary fundamentals and tools and elements and tradition to be successful. Those things right there are all put in place and I think at this particular time I can do something special here and be a part of something special."

Coach Pierre seems well suited for that challenge. He knows competing for titles is expected by the fan base and the college. He says that certainly is one of his priorities, but not, he says, the only one.

You know I want the young men to have a positive experience on this campus, in this community and in the Panhandle. Because I think this is a special place, a special place for someone to come in and experience, a student athlete to spend a lifetime. To want to come back and actually live here, and give back to this community."

The coach currently busy recruiting, trying to replace just about every spot on the roster.
