Sandestin, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Before most of Northwest Florida was awake, more than 200 triathletes swam, biked, and ran across the finish line at the 32nd annual Sandestin Trathlon.
Veteran triathlete David Shearon placed first overall with a time of 1:29:23, beating Christopher Thorn's time by more than two minutes. Thorn crossed the line first because of the staggered swimming start.
Shearon was the first local finisher in May's IRONMAN 70.3 Gulf Coast triathlon, placing inside the top 50 overall.
Yekaterina Karpitskaya is the first female finisher, 14th overall with a time of 1:37:24.
Athletes hit the water fat 6:30 a.m. in waves decided by age. The followed the half-mile swimming portion with 20 miles on the bikes up and down 30A and a four race on foot to the finish through Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.
