TRENTON, NJ (WJHG/WECP) Rutherford and Gulf Coast alum Nick Nelson is now just a step away, so to speak, from donning the pinstripes and playing for the New York Yankees.
Nelson Tuesday promoted from the Yankees Double-A team in Trenton, New Jersey, to the organization's Triple-A team in Scranton-Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania.
After a stellar high school career, Nick moved on to Gulf Coast, as a pitcher and position player, excelling in both spots. He was headed to the University of Florida before getting drafted by the Yankees in 2016.
And he's been excelling on every level, and this year, after starting in single-A, moved quickly to double-A Scranton.
There this season, with a fastball now in the mid-90's, 7-2 with an e-r-a of 2.35! And 83 strikeouts in 65 innings.
That earning the trip to Triple-A. So he is now just a phone call and quick train or plane ride from suiting up and pitching in the Bronx!
