PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Although the regular seasons for high school sports are over, baseball players in our area are getting their reps in throughout the summer months.
As coaches have been telling us this week, they consider the start of June to be the start of the season.
With upperclassmen competing on travel teams, these games are a pivotal opportunity for underclassmen to acclimate to the varsity work regimen. Physical fitness is an important aspect of the routine as well.
If all goes according to plan over the next few weeks, ability and muscle growth will render these players nearly unrecognizable come fall.
"The summer in general is about getting stronger and faster," Rutherford baseball coach Cody Chizmar said. "Coach Tillman, the football coach at Rutherford, does all of our weightlifting during the summer and does a great job. The strength from my first year to second year was unbelievable. September 6th is the first day I really see them. And from July 1st to September 6th, I expect to see a different kid than I saw in June."
Teams play on roughly ten dates between this week and the end of June.
