MIRAMAR BEACH, FL (WJHG/WECP) Now to an annual event set for another part of South Walton County.
The Sandestin Triathlon is a half mile swim, a 20 mile bike and a 4 mile run in and around the resort starting at 6:30 Saturday morning.
"So for the 32nd annual Sandestin Triathlon we're expecting 300 athletes to come to our area to participate in the event." race director Adam Alfonso told me Wednesday. "They're coming from all over the country. The majority are, of course, coming from along the Gulf Coast, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and some areas of Florida. And a lot of them are repeat athletes that look forward to our event year after year."
Adam says they are expecting the weather to clear up in advance of the race, but as always, he says, safety is paramount.
"For the safety of those on the bikes, we do have some road closures on Highway 30A from the beginning of 98 and 30A to Blue Mountain Beach." Adam says. "The turnaround is at Big Daddy's Bicycle Shop."
And as far as the swim goes, Adam says they always monitor the conditions of the Gulf, and would never let swimmers go in if they weren't safe adding "The South Walton Fire District plays a huge role in this event. They help out with our lifeguards on the beach, so we'll have dedicated lifeguard services, EMS services, and some our Sandestin employees will be out on YOLO boards and kayaks."
The swim in the Gulf, the bike goes east to 30A and back, and the run stays within the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort. Here is the link to the race course maps. http://www.sandestintriathlon.com/maps/
