Somewhat delayed search for new men's basketball coach at Gulf Coast begins

PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) The search for a new men's basketball head coach at Gulf Coast State College is on!

The folks at Gulf Coast State College sending out a release sent by email Monday which states the application process is open as of Monday and closes April 22nd.

That means there was a more than month long gap between the departure of the previous head coach Jay Powell, who turned in his resignation back at the end of February, and the start of this search process.

Sources close to the college have indicated to us the delay was caused by the administration giving some thought to ending men's basketball at Gulf Coast. The impetus to that, obvious financial constraints, made worse by the after-effects of the hurricane.

We've reached out to G.C. president Dr. John Holdnak, he did not confirm any talk of ending the program, but did commit to sitting down with us next week after traveling out of town this week to discuss how the program moves forward.

He did state the college is committed to moving ahead and how they intend to find a coach who can get the program to a level competitive with the likes of Chipola and Northwest Florida.
