Vernon prepares for game with Chipley while enjoying remarkable win last week

Vernon prepares for season opener Friday at Crestview

VERNON, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Vernon football team is working towards a Friday game against Chipley, while looking back at a rather remarkable win last week!

The Tigers head to Vernon with the two teams having varying degrees of success so far this season.Chipley 0-3 so far, Vernon goes into that one 2-1, with the lone loss to 7A Crestview.

Let's focus on the Yellowjackets here, who are coming off an incredible comeback win last week over Autauga Academy out of Alabama.

A 40 yard touchdown run by K'wan Powell and a 49 yard pick 6 by Darrell Powell, helped the Jackets overcome what was at one point, a 25 point defecit. They would win the game by two, 44-42.

The team truly proving it's not over until it's over, the INT they say, the biggest play.

"It (the interception) really was a game changer." says Vernon running back and defensive back K'wan Powell. "Coach T he was hyped, the whole sideline was hyped. And that was really like the biggest turning point."

"We went in the locker room and we talked and we said this is not us." says Vernon receiver and defensive back Darrell Powell. "We're better than this and we came out in that second half and we didn't give up. We kept pushing and pushing.

"I told the kids it's like a snowball effect." Vernon head coach Gerald Tranquille told us. "One time you're up and something happens and it's just a snowball. It gets bigger and bigger. And finally we were on the side of that snowball, it worked in our favor. But I mean it can just change like that, in an instant. You get momentum, start making plays and you start believing. And just like that you're back in the ballgame."

As for celebrating that big win, well the players and fans certainly did a bit of that. Coach Tranquille on the other hand, says he took little or no time to simply move on.

"They tend to get on to me all the time 'cause I don't really celebrate. I'm always looking ot the next game, always watching film, always critiquing. I don't really relax and celebrate until the end of the season."

That game Friday night set for 7 o'clock, it's one of several we'll feature on Friday Night Overtime.
