West Florida beats Ferris State, advances to Division II national championship

Big Rapids, MI (WJHG/WECP) - The "Trap Tour" continues for the West Florida football team.

For the second time in the program's four year existence, the Argonauts are headed to the Division II national championship game, the latest in a line of road playoff wins coming 28-14 Saturday at Ferris State.

UWF (12-2) forced six turnovers, turning a 14-7 deficit in the third quarter into an early fourth quarter lead behind a pair of two of redshirt freshman Austin Reed's three touchdown passes. Reed finished 18-of-44 with 299 yards.

Tate Lehtio led UWF receivers with seven receptions for 118 yards and two touchdowns.

Ferris State was a 20 point home favorite.

UWF's roster includes several players of area relevance, including backup quarterback Peyton Calhoun (Mosley), linebacker Trey Mathews (Blountstown), defensive lineman Stephen Mathews (Blountstown), offensive lineman Dalton Simpler (Freeport), offensive lineman Josh Del Grego (Fort Walton Beach), and defensive lineman Daryl Wilson (Bay). Wilson recorded one tackle on Saturday.

The Argos advance to play Minnesota State in the national championship Saturday December 21 in McKinney, Texas.
