Wrestlers ready for state championship in Kissimmee

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Following Saturday's regional championship in Jacksonville, 12 wrestlers from our area have earned a spot at the state championship in Kissimmee.

The top four in each class qualify for the final tournament, which begins Friday and runs through Saturday.

Arnold's Drew St. Amant and South Walton's Ethan Pickren highlight the group, securing the regional championship at 152 and 126 respectively.

South Walton leads the way with four wrestlers heading down:
Seth Weinthal, Dylan Haman, and Harris Barton joining Pickren.

Mosley (Dawson Bevens and Jarred Pitts), Marianna (Cole Maddox and Ethan Ellis), and Bay (Brandon Jackson and Andrew Luzny) each tout two qualifiers. Bozeman (Nicholas Hejke) and Arnold (St. Amant) have one wrestler on the bill.

Last weekend's results show that this part of the state is proving to be a mainstay at the highest level of competition.

"I think we as a district in this area have risen to that status," South Walton coach Carey Nick said. "In the past, we've always had one or two in the state series, but this year you saw a lot more mixed in."

The top 16 wrestlers from all regions will compete in each class.
