Dermatology Specialists of Florida FAQ

What is a dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a physician who has completed four years of medical school, one year of internship, and three years of specialized training to become an expert in diagnosing and treating conditions specific to your skin.

How do I know if I am seeing a board-certified dermatologist?
Ask at your dermatology office if your physician is board-certified. It is illegal to claim board certification if it is not true. You can look up the board status of any physician at the American Board of Medical Specialties. You can also check the status of a specific dermatologist by calling the American Board of Dermatology at 1-866-ASK-ABMS (275-2267). Our physicians at Dermatology Specialists are board-certified.

What specialist is best-trained for non-surgical procedures like Botox®, dermal fillers, and laser treatments?
Board-certified dermatologists are specialists who have received extensive training in the use of Botox, fillers, and lasers for cosmetic enhancement. Medical providers like physician assistants or nurses practicing alongside these specialists are also trained and have experience providing these types of treatments. Some patients may decide to see a provider within a different specialty for convenience or maybe to take advantage of a discount; however, when it comes to your skin health, long-term experience, consistent training, and special knowledge of the skin is best. A poor outcome could take months and additional treatments to fix.

How do I know if a spot needs to be checked?
If you have a spot or area on your skin that is constantly irritated, bleeds for no reason, or has changed in size, shape, and/or color, it needs to be examined by a dermatologist within a month. Know your body and perform regular self-exams.

Is it OK for me to see a physician assistant or nurse practitioner for my skin health?
A dermatology physician assistant (PA) or a nurse practitioner who has trained under the supervision of a dermatologist will have extensive experience and knowledge when it comes to treating skin conditions.
