VERNON, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A five foot deep sinkhole near Vernon is forcing a dirt road to stay closed through the weekend.
As soon as workers spotted the hole Wednesday, Public Works Supervisors closed Fortune Lane. It's located in a pretty rural neighborhood on the west side of Vernon.
By Thursday they said the hole grew from two feet wide to eight feet wide.
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recommended the city fill the cavity with a clay mix.
Crews brought in three truckloads of dirt to fill the sinkhole, but it opened back up Friday morning.
Crews will watch the spot through the weekend and emergency management leaders will re-evaluate the area Monday.
No homes are currently affected.
