Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport released its report for April showing only 6,000 passengers traveling through for that month. By comparison, April of 2019 saw just under 114,000 passengers travel through.
Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport's executive director said airport traffic over Memorial Day weekend was down 60% percent, but calls it an improvement compared to April when traffic was down 95%.
According to the Executive Director of the airport, Parker McClellan, the number of passengers in the airport has decreased dramatically. McClellan says, typically during this time of the year there is anywhere from 1500 to 1800 passengers a day, but now there's only been about 300 passengers.
No alcohol will be allowed on the beach during the month of March and this is the first spring break season police are allowed to fine or arrest those who get in the water while double red flags are flying.
