Holiday travel tips

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - 'Tis the season to be jolly, to be merry, but not to get sick.

Holidays, however, mean travel and travelers are especially prone to infectious diseases and upper respiratory infections.

"Can you image how many different people you get in contact with, especially if you're traveling through an airport or a train station or a bus station?" says Goutham Rao, MD, Chair of Family Medicine at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center. Dr. Rao recommends washing hands as much as possible and making sure you have a flu shot.

When flying, getting up and moving during the flight can prevent blood clots and can relax travelers while preparing for the stress of travel, especially if passing through a large airport, can help alleviate anxiety and therefore make a flyer less vulnerability to illness.

Jet lag is another problem on transcontinental flights and there's no right way to deal but, regardless, there are tips that can help with any travel.

"Get as much rest as possible," says Dr. Rao. "Avoid alcohol, avoid stimulants when you travel. Alcohol can be dehydrating [and] stimulants will probably disrupt your sleep."
