Company looking to drill for oil in a Calhoun County floodplain

CALHOUN COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Almost a month after Calhoun County Commissioners made a motion to approve an exploratory oil drilling site near Kinard, another company is asking for permission to drill.

At Tuesday night's planning and commission meetings, Cholla Petroleum representatives presented the board with information on their plans to drill for oil.

The difference between this request and the previous company is location.

Cholla plans to drill near a floodplain, which means an amendment was needed to clarify where drilling is allowed.

A public hearing was held at both meetings and the amendment passed.

"I believe we've got the support of most of the citizens in Calhoun County for this and like it was discussed, it's going to be a great benefit to everyone, not just the landowners, everyone here in Calhoun County and surrounding counties, I hope," Commission Chairman Danny Wise said.

The amendment must now be reviewed by several state agencies before Cholla can move to the next stage of the application process.
