Patients avoiding critical medical treatments due to COVID-19 fears

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - COVID-19 has kept many people from living their normal lives, but there are some normal things COVID-19 should not stop you from doing.

One local oncologist is urging patients to speak with their doctor before deciding not to go to a visit out of fear of contracting COVID-19. (WJHG/WECP)

Dr. Andrew Weber said he’s starting to see more and more patients stay home out of fear of contracting the virus instead of going to their doctor visits and receiving critical treatments.

Weber said he understands patients’ legitimate concern but said doctors' offices and hospitals typically have a cleaning station every five feet, and in some cases can even come to your car for things like injections.

He added when in doubt about whether you should go to your doctor or not, call ahead and ask.

”If you have a underlying disease and you’re concerned about getting sicker form the virus you cannot ignore the underlying disease. So you can get sicker from the underlying disease if it’s untreated. So sometimes it’s best to come get your treatment for that underlying disease,” said Weber.

He also said if you’re someone with an underlying disease, it can be a risk to go out but it should be a calculated decision between you and your doctor.
