FDLE investigating officer-involved shooting in Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - UPDATE 06/27/2019 3:42 p.m.:

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating an officer involved shooting in Springfield. (MGN)

Police said Wednesday around midnight, law enforcement arrived at an apartment complex on Bob Little Road to investigate a disturbance called into 911. They say the caller said a man was getting a gun, and that children had left the apartment but their mother was still inside.

Springfield Police, along with the Florida Highway Patrol Troopers, and a deputy from the Bay County Sheriff's Office, arrived and said they heard a female yelling for help.

Sergeant Kenneth Crawford of the Springfield Police Department opened the door where he says he found a man who began to raise a semi automatic pistol towards him. Police say with Sergeant Crawford's training and 11 years of experience, he thought his life was in danger and fired at the man, shooting him three times.

Bay County EMS arrived to provide medical care to the man, but the man died.

Sergeant Crawford has been placed on paid administrative leave until he is cleared for duty.


UPDATE 06/27/2019 11:55 a.m.:

We're learning more about an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead.

Springfield Police Chief Barry Roberts tells us officers arrived on scene shortly after midnight after getting reports of a woman being held at gunpoint by a man at an apartment complex on North Highway 22A.

He tells us within minutes of officers arriving on scene shots were fired and EMS was called.

Chief Roberts says the man was shot and life saving measures were taken, but the suspect died. He said no one else on scene was injured.


The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a shooting involving a police officer that happened during the overnight hours Wednesday.

Springfield Police say it happened at an apartment complex on North Highway 22A. They confirmed it was a Springfield Police Department officer who fired a gun.
