BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Former Bay County Sheriff Lavelle Pitts died Tuesday morning, according to the Bay County Sheriff's Office.
Pitts served as sheriff from 1981 to 1989. Many remember him as sheriff during a hostage incident at City Drugs back in May 1981.
Pitts began his 32-year career in law enforcement in April 1957, initially working for Bay County Sheriff "Doc" Daffin. He later became a local private investigator.
He wrote his memoirs in 2016 in a book titled "Umbrellas Make Poor Parachutes (and Other Life Lessons)". The book explores the highlights and low points of Pitts' personal and professional life.
No word yet on services for the former sheriff.
