PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Some students are becoming the next generation of scientists and engineers, one block at a time.
Gulf Coast State College hosted the FIRST LEGO League of Northwest Florida regional championship for the first time ever Saturday afternoon.
The championship consisted of around 20 teams from across northwest Florida.
The teams had to design a solution around a scientific question or problem using LEGO robots that they programmed themselves.
Organizers said that the competition is more than just fun and games.
Celena Crews, a FIRST member said, "It provides challenges. They learn problem solving, teamwork, all those soft skills we hear about. It's more than just opening a textbook and what are we learning next, what's the next standard."
Five teams advanced to the state level, where they will compete for a chance to go to the world championships in Houston.
