Local mentors honored

PANAMA CITY, Fla.(WJHG/WECP) - Many call them heroes and Friday those heroes were honored for their investment in local students.

Mentors for the New Horizons Learning Center in Panama City were treated to a luncheon and got to see some of the fruits of their labor.

Margaret Tidmore started the program 20 years ago when she retired from Bay District Schools.

Local businesses and individuals who have donated either money or time to keep the program going strong for two decades were also honored.

Several of the graduating seniors and their mentors spoke to the group.

Most talked about not having a father present in their life and how their mentor has given them that role model they needed.

The mentors all said they get more out of it than the students.

If you're interested in being a mentor just call the school.
