LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Turkeys aren't the only thing being stuffed this Thanksgiving break.
Many local students don't know where their next meal will be coming from over Thanksgiving break, but the Backpack Blessings program is making sure they don't have to worry.
"Basically they just walk around a table and bags, and so each bag is packed individually by an adult and then put in a bin and loaded in cars and then taken to each school," said Alex Gentili, the Community & College Pastor at Emerald Coast Fellowship Church.
Eleven local churches and sponsors work together every week to make sure students in need have meals for the weekend. When holidays like Thanksgiving come around, they go the extra mile to make the food last the entire break.
"This week, and any holiday, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, any time the students are going to be out for a whole week, they usually double bag, and that's what we do. So, this week we'll still service those 398 students, but we'll double it, so we'll really pack right under 800 bags this week," said Gentili.
Each backpack stuffed by Emerald Coast Fellowship Church will help students get into the holiday spirit.
"We do have specific kind of food items that would relate to Thanksgiving," said Gentili, "But we also add, especially for the elementary students, we add a coloring sheet that's Thanksgiving, that'll have like a picture of a turkey on it or something."
