LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - "2013 I was canoeing around my house so I gotta prepare," said Lynn Haven resident Dave Dixon.
At the Lynn Haven Sports Complex bags to fill with sand are available for the possible upcoming storm. (WJHG/WECP)
"I'm a little nervous about the storm that's rolling in so I just want to make sure that I'm protected," said another resident, Kelly Miller.
With the concerns of heavy rains headed our way, the City of Lynn Haven is making sure residents take all the precautions they can.
"With the storm, we decided to be proactive and go ahead and start today letting people come get bags and get filled up," said Lynn Haven's Community Service and Animal Control Director David Horton.
At the Lynn Haven Sports Complex the city is giving away free bags and the sand to fill them.
"We started with four truckloads and if we need more we will get more," said Horton.
Sand will be available through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Residents can grab up to 10 bags per household but they must show their license or a water bill for proof of residence.
"We wanna try and get it where everyone in Lynn Haven can get some bags, it ain't just one come get all," said Horton.
And locals say they're thankful the city is helping out. because many of them are still recovering from Hurricane Michael.
" I really appreciate it. The City of Lynn Haven has been really great," said Miller.
With the possibility of three to eight inches of rain in the coming days, the sandbags could come in handy.
"When the cars come down the street it prevents the waves from getting into my garage and flooding my garage," said Dixon.
City staff says many residents are taking advantage of the offer.
"We have seen a bunch of people coming to get the bags," said Horton.
So both the city and residents can maybe rest a little easier should mother nature come calling.
July 20th at Sharon Sheffield Park the city will be giving out more free sand to bag, as well as hosting a shot clinic for dogs and cats.
