Lynn Haven woman collects and donates backpacks, school supplies to children in need

LYNN HAVEN, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - For students who do not have the proper school supplies, succeeding in the classroom may come as a challenge.

One local woman is hoping to change that.

Rochella Wilson is a Lynn Haven resident, a former Oscar Patterson Elementary School student, and a retired daycare owner. Now, she focuses her energy on helping the children in her community.

"They have to have the tools they need to start school," Wilson said.

She has seen the difference it makes when students come to school prepared, which is why she decided to hit the books.. by packing them up.

"So, it was laid on my heart to do this," Wilson said.

What was laid on her heart will be placed on the backs of children in need in the community.

Mrs.Wilson, with the help of donations and sponsors, fills backpacks with school supplies to distribute out of her own home.

She told us this will be her fourth year taking on the project. In her first year alone, she said she passed out more than 70 backpacks.

One of those tools is something you wouldn't find inside a backpack or pencil box. Compassion.

"When I do it give it to them in August that they will see that this lady cares about us," Wilson said.

She usually waits for school supply lists to be released in the summer to properly fill the backpacks.

As for her goal for the next school year, she hopes to fill and distribute 100 backpacks.

"But I'm feeling good this year. I'm ready to go this year."
