CALHOUN COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Calhoun County man was charged with murder Wednesday after a lengthy investigation.
James Hathaway, 28, was arrested for the December 30 murder of Charles "Frank" Smith, 79.
According to the arrest report, deputies found Smith face down inside his home with his hands bound behind his back and his face badly injured. The report says that Smith recounted the incident to deputies before EMS arrived, saying that someone had knocked on his door and when he answered he was punched and knocked unconscious.
According to the report, a neighbor of Hathaway's had set up a game camera because of ongoing issues with Hathaway. The neighbor submitted the camera footage to investigators showing Smith's vehicle and forklift in close proximity to Hathaway's house on the day of the murder.
Hathaway was consequently charged with burglary with assault or battery and grand theft over $10,000 but less than $20,000 in addition to his murder charge.
Smith was airlifted to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
