Man could face decades in prison for fatal crash in Okaloosa County

Calvin Lee Wilks, Jr.

OKALOOSA COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - State Attorney Bill Eddins says on Wednesday, April 24, 2019, 28-year-old Calvin Lee Wilks, Jr., entered a plea to DUI Manslaughter.

According to Eddins over a year ago, Wilks was involved in a fatal crash that killed his passenger, 30-year-old Derek Anthony Varner and seriously injured a 19-year-old high school senior who was driving the truck that Wilks hit.

Eddins says the incident occurred in Crestview on April 21, 2018.

We're told Wilks admitted he'd been drinking and shouldn't have been driving. A test of his blood alcohol revealed it was .147. The test also revealed Wilks had THC in his system too.

In addition to the DUI Manslaughter plea, Wilks also entered a plea on additional charges, including DUI Causing Serious Bodily Injury and No Vehicle Registration. He could face up to 20 years in prison. Sentencing has been scheduled for May 14, 2019, at 130pm.
