Medical Monday: Atrial Fibrillation increases risk for stroke

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Patients with an irregular heartbeat or Atrial Fibrillation are at an increased risk of stroke.

According to Interventional Cardiologist Dr. Francis Le, “Atrial Fibrillation is an electrical disorder of the upper chambers of the heart.” This disorder can sometimes cause the heart rate to speed up or feel irregular. Dr. Le says some patients don’t feel any symptoms at all.

Treatment can include lifestyle modifications, medication or a medical procedure by an electrophysiologist.

“As a cardiologist, I minimize people’s risk for cardiovascular events and with atrial fibrillation, you always have to worry about diet, and I always rule out for obstructive sleep apnea and encourage people to lose weight,” explained Dr. Le.

If you feel any symptoms of a heart irregularity, seek medical attention immediately.
