Medical Monday: Surgery for pediatric chest wall abnormalities

PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - As children develop, a chest wall abnormality can develop. Pediatric Surgeon Dr. Beth Walford says one condition she treats is a funnel chest or a dented in chest. She can correct this problem through surgery performed at Gulf Coast Regional Medical Center.

Dr. Walford says treatment is important because the condition can compress the heart or lungs. The surgery only requires small incisions, but it does require a hospital stay. It's most effective when performed during early puberty.
