The event started with a moment of silence for individuals who lost their lives in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Speakers shared their memories from that day. A Coast Guard chief spoke about living in New York during the terrorist attacks, his wife worked one mile from the towers. Another talked about deciding to join the military because of the terrorist attacks.

"It's important to us in the Navy because we here are called to service as did all those firefighters, EMT and law enforcement officials, and all the others that ran into danger to help others. They heard a call to service, so we share that with them and we want to honor their sacrifice," Chief Navy Diver Zachary Wolff said.

Wolff said it's important to hold a ceremony every year to ensure we never forget what happened.
