WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Walton County Board of Commissioners (BCC) and Walton County Solid Waste Department have opened a new solid waste transfer station in DeFuniak Springs.
Walton County averages about 250 tons of garbage per day and during peak season can pass 500 tons, according to Walton County Public Information Officer Louis Svehla.
The new transfer station is designed to handle the peak volume safely and efficiently.
All garbage will be contained inside the building and all tipping and loading for transport will be contained inside the building. In addition, the building is designed to allow for expansion as growth continues and garbage volume increases.
The old transfer station was built 25 years ago before Walton County experienced large population and tourism growth.
The County Landfill is located at 1118 Institution Road.
