At Tuesday's school board meeting, they awarded two people with the Superintendent's Spirit of Our Community Award.

Rachal Smoker and Abbie Capes were the two recipients, each for different reasons.

Smoker was awarded for everything her non-profit, Rachal's Recovery Relief, Inc., has donated to the district, including much of Smoker's time. Capes was awarded for the positive murals she painted at various schools in the district.

District officials said they decided to recognize a student and a community member each time to show both adults and students can make a difference.

Sharon Michalik, Director of Communications for Bay District Schools, said, "We've come so far, but we have so far yet to go, so it's really going to take ordinary people doing extraordinary things in order to help us continue upon that recovery journey."

Michalik says they will be giving out the awards sporadically most likely.
