Underground fuel stalls park project

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - One of many new parks under Walton County's thumb is on its way.

At the beginning of the summer, Walton County commissioners approved the purchase of the land north of the Highway 331 bridge with excess funding from the bridge project.

Home of an old gas station that still stores fuel tanks underground, located right off of S. Bay Grove Road, Walton County public works officials are looking to work with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to remove the petroleum.

Public works officials tell NewsChannel 7 the previous owner was already working with the government agency but now that the county has ownership of the land, they must sign a new site access agreement with the DEP before they can get back to the cleanup.

The agreement will be presented to Walton County commissioners at Tuesday's meeting.
