Update on road projects in Walton and Okaloosa counties

WALTON COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Driving along Highway 98 can be confusing with all of the construction underway.

"Through Okaloosa and Walton County there's about 10 miles of construction activity," said Florida Department of Transportation Public Information Specialist, Tanya Branton.

There are a lot of different projects going on.

"We have two widening projects and we have a resurfacing project through Downtown Destin that runs from airport road to the bridge," said Branton.

Branton says this summer we can expect to see a change in the flow of traffic.

"There may be a traffic shift starting toward the west end of the project, coming east where traffic will maybe transition to the south side of the roadway," said Branton.

This is something that will happen over a period of time.

Branton says, "What you may see is phases of traffic being shifted."

Through these improvement parts of Highway 98 will be upgraded from four to six lanes, as well as signal upgrades, drainage improvements., sidewalk reconstruction, and bike lanes.

But Branton says it's important for locals to set a good example for those new to the current traffic pattern.

"That's why it's important for us to make sure that we are staying alert because it may be that they have missed a turn, and don't realize that when they're coming out it's right turn only," says Branton.

To make a safe turn, one needs to go to the next intersection to either make a U-turn or make a left.

"Be extra careful of what's going on, be mindful of the person who is driving in front of you and around you, because you never know who might be walking alongside of the road or who might be biking alongside of the road," said Branton.

The resurfacing project is expected to be completed later this year.

The road widening project in Walton County is expected to be complete by late 2020 and the widening project in Okaloosa County is expected to be complete by Spring 2021.
