Volunteer construction takes hit in Bay County due to COVID-19.

BAY COUNTY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The economy of Bay County is built on the military and tourism. However, construction has been booming since Hurricane Michael. That is, until the coronavirus pandemic began to impact the number of volunteers who can work across the Panhandle at Rebuild Bay County INC. partner organizations.

"We are still continuing some level of rebuilding activities or recovery activities," said Donna Pilson, Executive Director of Rebuild Bay County Inc. "However we have seen a significant slowdown with the cancellation of a lot of our volunteer groups. Volunteers who fall into the high risk category are no longer available to us."

Many of the volunteers these organizations rely on come from college groups, and social distancing measures have made getting people here to help difficult. Pilson remains optimistic the lack of volunteers won't last long.
