SOUTHPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - A Southport woman was arrested on child abuse charges after Bay County Sheriff's deputies say they responded to a call of an unresponsive child.
Deputies say when they arrived at the home, the child was lethargic and minimally responsive. Deputies say when EMS arrived they said they believed the child could have overdosed on an unknown substance.
Deputies say an investigative unit went to the hospital and spoke with the child's caregiver Diane Farris, 58, of Southport.
Investigators say Farris said the child was jumping on furniture when she heard the child fall off. She told investigators the child was unresponsive and she called 911.
Investigators say Farris was twitching during the interview and they thought she could be on drugs. They asked Farris if she was using drugs but she denied it.
Investigators issued a search warrant and found two pipes with a leafy green substance they suspected was synthetic marijuana, or spice. They found more of the substance in the kitchen. The items have been sent off for testing.
When investigators spoke to Farris again, they say she admitted to using spice and that she smoked some that morning.
Deputies say the child tested positive for spice and Farris was arrested and charged with child abuse.
