Chipola, Gulf Coast split games on Indians' Sophomore Night

MARIANNA, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Chipola's sophomore night against Gulf Coast coincided with the final night of the NJCAA basketball regular season. While the Chipola men won and will play on in the state tournament, the women lost and will not make the playoffs.

In the women's game, the Lady Commodores took the lead with 48 seconds remaining, hanging on to win 69-65. Shayla Bennett's four free throws in the final minute accounted for four of her game high 29 points. With the victory, the Panhandle Conference champs also take the season series from Chipola, two games to one.

The Chipola men's team will make the playoffs as the second seed in the Panhandle, but ended their home schedule with a 80-69 victory.

Playoff seeding (or lack thereof) had already been determined for both schools prior to Saturday's games.

In between games, the Indians honored their departing sophomores. Saturday was the final game for Lady Indians Tyra Johnson, Jamee Ward, Lawrencia Moten, Naomi House, Endia Jones, Kiana Coomber, and Nana Sule.

Although the men will play on, sophomores Yuat Alok (who will continue his collegiate career at TCU), TJj Howard, CJ Williamson, Shamarkus Kennedy, and Deric Patton were honored by the crowd before their last game in Marianna.
