MARIANNA, FL (WJHG/WECP) As they prepare to host a big weekend of hoops at the Johnson Health Center, the Chipola men's basketball team continues to work on a rather steep learning curve.
The Indians hosting four games Friday and Saturday with Gulf Coast, Polk and South Georgia Tech all competing as well.
Chipola men's basketball team works through non conference season
The Indians are off to an 8-3 start. That with a roster that includes mostly new faces, and as you may know, that's the nature of Juco ball, this squad though in particular, very young. 9 freshman, and just four returning players from last year.
So it's a steep learning curve for coach Foley and his guys as they work towards the start of conference play in early January.
"Just learning to play for forty minutes I think is the biggest thing." coach Foley told us during his team's practice Thursday. "Once you get a team that does that I think you've got something really good going. Because every level of college basketball, nobody is invincible. And if you don't protect yourself and play for forty minutes then you kind of put yourself at chance of defeat. And we learned that the hard way and hopefully we can respond to it and grow from it. Because you know a lot of times that's the only way to grow, from defeat or failure."
As for hosting this weekend's Chipola Classic, well after spending a good stretch on the road the last few weeks, Foley says he and his guys are very much looking forward to this early December homecoming.
"It's going to be nice. We're looking forward to it. We've been on the road for three straight weeks now, so it'll be nice to be in the place where we practice every day. Familiarity will be key. It's good to get those road games and neutral site games where you have to create your own energy a lot of times. Your fans aren't there. it's different officiating crews, different styles. We're excited to be back up here, joining with another Panhandle team where we can get back to our home court."
The games Friday is Gulf Coast vs. Polk at 5, South Georgia Tech at 7. The Saturday games are Gulf Coast vs. Tech at 3, Polk vs. Chipola at 5.
