SANDESTIN, Fla (WJHG/WECP) - Sandestin's Baytowne Marina is gearing up to host between 85 and 90 big time sportfishing yacths and teams.
The 2018 Emerald Coast Blue Marlin Classic week is here.
Some of the boats rolling in Monday, with more coming in Tuesday and Wednesday.
Registration takes place Wednesday followed by a Kickoff Party at Sandestin.
The boats will head out midday Thursday with weigh-ins set for Friday and Saturday.
It's likely, if the boat count holds in the mid to high 80's, this event will top the $2 million mark for the first time.
Last year, a similar number had signed on, but the week of the event, a tropical storm blew through the Gulf causing about 50 boats to withdraw.
"So we definitely know the challenges of weather," Adam Alfonso, ECBC Tournament Director said. "We are constantly monitoring it. We have some great weather sponsors that are providing us with great and accurate forecasts. They are going to continue to monitor it for us until we get to the event. Basically we are hoping that we have great weather this year and that it is as calm as can be and the fishing is fantastic."
Last year, late in the week the weather died down, and by pushing back a day, it allowed 36 teams to fish and they brought in two blues over 500 pounds.
