FREEPORT, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - Friday gives a couple of area football teams the chance for some bragging rights in Walton County.
Freeport getting set to host Walton as the Bulldogs look to start the season 4-0
The Walton Braves (2-1) travel south to Freeport, with coach Shaun Arntz's Bulldogs a perfect 3-0 thus far.
The Orange and Blue claim wins over Maclay, Holmes and Pike Liberal Arts (AL), all on the road. Arntz certainly seems pleased with how things are going so far.
"These guys have been taking advantage of every opportunity that has come their way," Arntz said. "They've definitely earned everything that they've received thus far, and it's been a lot of fun being with them every day with practice and enjoying the Friday nights. You know they see the rewards for all their hard work."
Now the competition level bumps up a bit with 3A Walton coming in. Coach Arntz says he feels if his 1A team can simply keep playing at the level it's been playing, on both sides of the ball, they feel they can compete with anyone close to their level.
"On defense, we're really relying on a lot of experience from last year. We gave up a lot on defense last year because we were really inexperienced and we returned a good bit of starters. We're really relying on their experience and it surely is paying off.
"Offensively, Brandon Siples is really carrying the load there. The O-line is staying fresh. We're able to play our offensive line and defensive line just one way. So that keeps them fresh all four quarters and it's really helping us out."
Siples and the line have have posted more than 500 yards rushing in the first three games.
One other aspect of his team the coach is happy about is the attitude of the players. Arntz says he's not having to work to keep anyone humble or focused.
"That's been the most pleasant thing about this. I've not had to rope these guys in, that they've got to be taking it this way or that way. They know based on our offseason programs and conditioning-all that stuff-that we've done that no matter what happened yesterday, the windshield is always ten times bigger than the rear view mirror. We've got to be looking ahead and continue on to the next challenge."
The Walton at Freeport game is set for 7 p.m. Friday, one of several games we'll feature on Friday Night Overtime.
