PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Gulf Coast baseball team is looking ahead to its home opener at Frazier Field Thursday.
Gulf Coast opening on the road last weekend down in Bradenton, dropping two of three to State College.
Commodores led by head coach Mike Kandler, who's now in his 13th season at the helm there.
And perhaps this season a little extra special, given that late in the 2017 season, and into the offseason, coach Kandler fought a battle with a form of oral cancer, chemo and all.
He says though he's ready for the rigors of the season ahead.
"I feel a lot better, amazing doctors here in town, that took care of me. From that standpoint, at this point I'm declared cancer free, hopefully it stays that way. Each week I get stronger, starting to feel a lot better, and of course the start of the season mentally makes you feel a lot better because you're doing something that I really like to do. There is no such thing as taking anything for granted anymore. Every day is a privilege to be out here. You know sometimes I used to get caught up in the winning and the losing, and I'm still gonna be a competitive person, that's just part of my nature. But just to be out here with a group of young people that are trying to do something positive and are trying to get better at something, really it's kind of a blessing, and it's just a lot of fun."
That game Thursday at 5.
