PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Gulf Coast men's basketball team is looking ahead to their first game against rival Chipola this season, while also working to fill a bit of a void.
Commodore sophomore and Blountstown alum KK Godwin is going to be out of the lineup for the immediate future. He suffered a hand injury over a week ago, and that turned out to be a broken hand. KK, who's averaging 13 points, 4 assists and 3 rebounds a game, sat out last Wednesday's loss to Pensacola, and will miss the next several conference games.
"So we're hoping, hopefully maybe early February, you know, knocking on wood, praying that he gets back by then." Gulf Coast head coach Phil Gaffney told us before practice Monday. "But there's no guarantee of exactly when he'll be back. So we can't fall back on the hope that he gets back. We all have to step up and play, nobody's accepting any excuses this time of year."
That being said, there are practical concerns about replacing not just the numbers Godwin's put up so far, but what he means to team in other ways, says coach Gaffney.
"Losing KK, he is our second leading scorer and leading assist guy. But really what he is, he's a leader and that's what we really missed. His leadership when things didn't go well against Pensacola. Give Pensacola credit, they played great, we just didn't shoot the ball well. So we really worked on a few things Saturday to try and get ready for Chipola on Wednesday. Shooting the basketball, getting good shots, playing good quality defense, rebounding the ball. A lot of things we laid down on against Pensacola, we've got to get better or we'll get killed when we go to Chipola."
That game Wednesday at Chipola set for 7:30, the ladies tip it off at 5:30.
