PANAMA CITY, FL (WJHG/WECP) Wednesday will go a long way in deciding what team will walk away with the Panhandle Conference title on the women's side of things.
That's when the teams of Northwest Florida and Gulf Coast will gather for the final time in the regular season.
And it will be a battle for first place. The Raiders come east with a 7-2 league record, Gulf Coast a game behind at 6-3. They've split their first two games, with each winning on the other's floor. Add up the points for each in those two games and you have 133 for Northwest, 130 for Gulf Coast. So two teams, evenly matched with great coaches going at it for a third time this season!
"Well it's been that way with every team in the Panhandle." Gulf Coast head coach Roonie Scovel told me Tuesday after her team's workout "You know just flip a coin on what given night. And we're all kind of beating up on each other. Yeah a little bit of different styles, both teams have some scorers and have some defenders and rebounders. Hopefully it will be a good game and hopefully we can figure out a way to win."
An added wrinkle to this matchup, because of work going on top of the Field House, particles have been falling from the ceiling, so they've had to put up a "drop cloth" of sorts to catch it all. Coach says it hasn't bothered her girls at practice, and in fact given what her team has been through since the start of practice, she wouldn't expect it to.
"We are just truly trying to, I guess the best way to put it is 'weather the storm' you know. Literally, the storm, and then every time we play a Panhandle team, it seems to be a bigger storm than the next. So we're just trying to weather the storm and stay in this mix. And right now with three games left, Gulf Coast is still in the mix and a few months ago, I wasn't even sure that was going to be the case. So I'm real proud of where we are. But we would certainly like for these young ladies to get a chance to advance to postseason play."
The ladies tip off at 5:30, the men at 7:30. Same game times at Chipola as the teams there host their counterparts from TCC.
