PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The Edgewater Classic is back in Panama City Beach and bigger than ever.
The 16th annual gymnastics meet at Edgewater Beach Resort welcomes more than 1000 athletes from 12 states over four days. They hail from as far as Texas, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, but the highlight Sunday morning was the host.
Edgewater Gymnastics Academy out of Southport took first in the Xcel Platinum session, with 12 year old Mackenzie Glover earning Grand Champion honors with the highest all-around scores.
It has been a wild year and a half for E.G.A. Their gym was destroyed by Michael and rebuilt. This event has been re-powered—to win makes for a dream weekend for all involved.
"I had to leave because of the storm and I had to go to Fort Myers to live with my grandma," Glover said. "I was really excited because a lot of my family came and my grandma came from Fort Myers. They were not expecting this!"
"I am so incredibly proud of our team," Edgewater Gymnastics owner and event organizer Pam Kitchen said. "They put so much work into putting this meet on to host these kids from all over. To come out here and perform the way they did takes so much work not just from our club, but it's also the local businesses too. They do so much for these athletes and it gives them other things to do besides just gymnastics while they were here."
The event wraps up Monday.
