LYNN HAVEN, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Mosley Dolphins are among several area girl's soccer teams getting set to start the state playoffs Tuesday.
Coach Betkowski and Mosley set for playoff opener Tuesday night
Mosley with a 12-4-1 record, and the champs of 5A district one, are the four seed in their half of the playoff bracket. The four district champs get those top four seeds, the other four seeds in this part of the playoffs seeded based on a points system.
What all that means, the Dolphins will play host to a 14-5-1 Matanzas team out of Palm Coast, south of Jacksonville. That match tomorrow night at Tommy Oliver.
Monday I visited the Dolphins practice and spoke with coach Marek Betkowski who is particularly proud of this year's squad after losing so many key players to graduation last year.
"So from the beginning of the season we were kind of searching for our style of playing, for our lineup of course." coach Betkowski told me. "To find the team chemistry. So from the beginning of the season it takes us quite a few games before the team clicks. And now they seem to play together very well and I am very, very pleased with the girl's performance almost every game, for the last 7 or 8 games."
And the coach is also proud of the fact his team not just survived, but won outright, the district title in perhaps one of the toughest 5A districts across the state!
"Yeah we are very proud of it. I don't know if everybody recognize, but we won probably one of the most competitive districts in the state. We have four teams out of our district playing in the regional playoffs. So out of 8 teams in regionals, four are from our district. So that's something we've never seen before. Of course the rules have changed, and that has something to do with it. But still a very competitive district."
The match with Matanzas at Tommy Oliver set for 7:00. Other first round matches Tuesday include Port St. Joe at Maclay, Providence at South Walton, Episcopal at North Bay Haven, Arnold at Menendez in St. Augustine, and Choctaw. at Ponte Vedra. Highlights and finals in our late news Tuesday night.
