TRENTON, N.J. (WJHG/WECP) - Rutherford and Gulf Coast alum Nick Nelson will continue his standout season next week with a new team.
Nelson is staying in the Yankees organization, earning a call-up to the Double-A Trenton Thunder. He is expected to continue as a starting pitcher debuting next week. Before the call-up, Nelson was projected to start for the Tampa Tarpons on Tuesday.
Pitching in Advanced-A with the Tarpons, Nelson posted a 3.45 ERA with 66 strikeouts in 62.2 innings pitched. In 12 starts and 13 appearances, he compiled a 5-3 record.
Following a Sunday matinee at Binghamton, the Thunder return home for series against Hartford Monday through Wednesday and Portland Thursday through Sunday.
Nelson is ranked as a top 25 prospect with the Yankees.
