Northwest Florida hires Butch Pierre as new hoops coach

NICEVILLE, FL (WJHG/WECP) The Northwest Florida men's basketball program has a new leader!

Northwest A.D. Ramsey Ross telling us Tuesday the Raiders have hired Butch Pierre as the replacement to Steve DeMeo, who turned in his resignation a few weeks ago, DeMeo going back home for an assistant's job at St. Johns.

Pierre comes to Niceville with a wealth of coaching experience. The 56 year old graduate of Mississippi State, has spent time at 8 different programs, big time programs like his alma mater, LSU, Oklahoma State, NC State and most recently Memphis.

While at LSU, he even spent time as the interim head coach, that back in 2008 after the Tigers fired head coach John Brady.

Pierre, like recent Gulf Coast hire Phil Gaffney, will have his work cut out for him in terms of recruiting and putting a roster together, just one freshman on the roster last season for coach DeMeo!
