PORT ST. JOE, FL (WJHG/WECP) Making the state playoffs is a good thing, for any team. Especially a young squad like this year's version of the Port St. Joe Sharks!
Week two of these playoffs however presents a very tough task indeed for coach Greg Jordan and his Sharks.
Port St. Joe, at 5-6, going north to take on 10-0 Blountstown in their 1A region semifinal.
The Tigers with a bye in round one, while the Sharks got a win over Blountstown last Friday in the region quarterfinals. St. Joe head coach Greg Jordan knows his team is a big underdog going into this one, but his is a young squad that seems to be playing its best ball at this point and they're ready to give the Tigers a good shot!
"Yeah you know the more playing time these kids can get you know, playoff-wise, it really pays off down the road." coach Jordan told me. "And we don't have a large roster number, about 25 kids so, you know everybody has to contribute. And hopefully everybody can do their part and at least give us a shot in this one this week."
As for taking on Blountstown, arguably the best 1A team in the state, and perhaps in the next few classes up as well, well coach Jordan knows he and his guys are up against a juggernaut, adding he's familiar with the Tigers roster. He saw many of them coming up while he was still coaching at Blountstown. And then his team played Blountstown in October, a 35-7 Tigers win.
"You know they're the one seed for a reason, and we're seeded where we are for a reason as well. They're a quality football team and well coached. They have good players at each level. And they force you to do some things that you don't necessarily like to do per se. They don't beat themselves, you have to go take plays and it gets tough at times."
That game Friday set for 7:00 at Bowles Field. We'll have the highlights late Friday night.
