Alexa Guarachi is the first Alabama tennis alum to win a Grand Slam match.

QUEENS, NY (WJHG/WECP) - Alexa Guarachi's year, and by extension her tennis career, keeps getting better.

First, Wimbledon, drawing Andy Murray and Serena Williams in mixed doubles. Then Pan Am gold last month.

This week, the Miramar Beach native opened the US Open with her first Grand Slam wins alongside Bernarda Pera. In doing so, she also became the first Alabama alum to win a match in a Grand Slam, beating the Japanese duo of Eri Hozumi and Makoto Ninomiya in round one and Anna-Lena Gronefeld (Germany) and Demi Schuurs (Netherlands) in round two.

Guarachi and Pera played for a spot in the quarterfinals Sunday, falling 6-3, 7-6 (7-4 tiebreak) in the round of 16 to Americana Vania King and Caroline Dolehide.

The South Walton alumna is currently ranked 86th in the WTA.
