Tattoo expo makes its mark on Panama City Beach
TATAK TATU EXPO comes back for season 2 Aug 15 - Aug 17
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WJHG/WECP) - The TATAK International Tatu Expo is back this weekend at the Boardwalk Beach Hotel and Convention Center.
The three-day event, running August 15–17, features tattoo booths, live competitions, food vendors, live music, raffle prizes, and more.
Host Dragon Edong, who has been tattooing for 46 years, says this year’s focus is on education and culture. “We are focusing on the tattoo itself. Learning to tattoo, the history, and everything. And you know, learn from today’s event,” he said.
Artists from Puerto Rico, Japan, the Philippines, Spain, Samoa, and across the U.S. are attending, along with many locals. Edong said last year’s turnout exceeded expectations, and he’s aiming even higher this year.
Tattoo enthusiast Jullian Kaplan came back to support his friend and take part in competitions. For him, tattooing is personal. “It’s freedom of speech. If you are a good artist, you should be recognized. Especially here locally, I like to support local artistry,” Kaplan said. He sees his tattoos as “tears on my skin… everything represents a time, or a memory, friends and family, past or present.”
Veteran tattoo artist Alycia Harr says conventions give artists a chance to learn, share styles, and connect with the community. “Being able to create art for people that’s gonna last on them their lifetime—that’s like an incredible honor,” she said.
Visitors can choose from flash tattoos or book appointments during the event.
